This is one of the cakes I had to do for the Wilton class I took. It was practice for doing the frosting rose.
Here is a shamrock cake to practice the star fill-in that is used frequently on character cakes.
This cake combines several techniques. It has a basketweave on the sides, royal icing flowers, and color flow butterflies. Royal icing allows for make ahead flowers and the color flow allows for more 3-d effects.
This is the fondant present cake. It is first frosted with buttercream frosting, then covered with a layer of fondant, and finally decorated with fondant embellishments.
I have been decorating cakes since finishing the Wilton courses in 2007. I am logging my cake creations here. I am going to start trying out different recipes and sharing them with you. I will be pushing the limits of what I can accomplish now and seeing what I can create. I will be attempting many things and you'll see the great and the horrible. It takes many times to learn new things and I will be trying new things as often as I can. With 2 kids, that may be less often than I wish, but I will still try to do one thing a month. Follow me on my learning expidition.
